An active and international group of researchers, scholars, teachers, students,
practitioners and policy makers, the ISCRAM (Information Systems for Crisis
Response and Management) Community has evolved into a global R&D community
with an annual International ISCRAM Conference alternating between Europe and
the USA since 2004.
The Proceedings of the ISCRAM2007 Conference in Delft (the Netherlands) contain
state-of-the art academic research papers on the design, development, use and
evaluation of Intelligent Human-Computer Systems for Crisis Management. The
topics of the papers range from human-computer interaction to sensor networks,
GIS, visualization, gaming, first responder technologies, virtual teams and
communities, to humanitarian operations. The ISCRAM2007 annual international
conference has attracted researchers and practitioners in Crisis Response and
Management from Europe, North America and the Pacific Region.
Bartel Van de Walle is an assistant professor of Information Systems
at Tilburg University (the Netherlands) and has served as the conference or
program chair for the ISCRAM conferences, the ISCRAM-CHINA Workshops and the
ISCRAM-TIEMS Summer School for PhD students. His research interests are in (distributed)
decision support systems, and in advancing the use of ISCRAMs for humanitarian
assistance.
During the past 4 years Paul Burghardt has led the Combined Systems
Program at DECIS lab. He helped develop the vision of DECIS lab to view future
crisis management organizations as networks of many human actors making use
of many artificial agents. His current interest is in the use of virtual (gaming)
environments as a vehicle for the development and implementation of complex
systems.
