This book provides an overview of all the components necessary to set-up an optimal design environment for electromagnetic devices. The ana1ysis tool is based on the finite element method (FEM) and/or the boundary element method (BEM). Possible approaches in order to apply these numerical analysis methods in solving optimal design problems, such as geometric parametrization techniques and design sensitivity computation are reviewed and discussed in some depth. Relevant theory, fundamental terminology and concepts used in stating and solving optimal design problems by specific deterministic and stochastic mathematical programming methods are provided. The main merit of this book is the 1ink between the mathematical concepts and computational practice, with particular emphasis on several applications. The book is one of the main results of a fruitful collaboration in the frame of the bilateral scientific and technological co-operation program between Romania and Flanders. The authors are academic staff members of the following universities: Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the Universiteit Gent and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
The volume is intended as a reference book by researchers, postgraduate students and practitioners facing electromagnetic optimization problems.
