Ineffective stakeholder management in strategic planning processes for large scale infrastructure hubs increasingly hampers the timely completion of new, major projects. In worst case scenarios, implementation fails and major projects are shelved.
This book analyzes how managers of large scale infrastructure hubs integrate stakeholder objectives in long term strategic planning processes. Using action research, the study provides an in-depth analysis of four cases. Each case study differs in terms of project complexity and spatial reach: the extension of DHL at Brussels National Airport, the master plan of the port of Brussels horizon 2015, the Economic Development Study for the port of Antwerp horizon 2030 and the governance of the port and industrial cluster on the Left Bank of the port of Antwerp.
This book provides several extensions to modern stakeholder theory. Many ideas and suggestions in the book revolve around strategies of real stakeholder inclusion, are truly actionable and can improve substantively the societal decision-making processes for large scale infrastructure hubs.
